York Minster

York Minster is a Gothic cathedral and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. It has a very wide Gothic nave and chapter house, a Perpendicular Gothic choir and east end, and Early English north and south transepts. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338, and over the Lady Chapel in the east end is the Great East Window, (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world.

Yorvik Viking Centre

Everything in the JORVIK Viking Centre is based on archaeological evidence unearthed during the Coppergate excavations undertaken between 1979-81 by York Archaeological Trust. Archaeologists started digging on the site of an old sweet factory and unearthed remains of 10th century Viking-age buildings. The damp conditions helped preserve everyday Viking items such as wood, leather, cloth, bugs and even a Viking toilet and its contents.

York Castle Museum

York Castle Museum is a museum on the site of York Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068.The museum's displays include recreated period rooms such as a Victorian parlour and a Jacobean dining room, displays of every day life in Dr. Kirk's Gallery and the Hearth Gallery, and craft workshops in the cells of the old Debtors Prison. There is also a recreation of a Victorian street (Kirkgate, named after Dr. Kirk). What was once an Edwardian street (Half Moon Court) is now an exhibit on the 1960s.

Ouse River Cruise

Why not enjoy a cruise on the picturesque River Ouse through the walled City of York? The boats operate year round for groups, with two city-centre landings, at King's Staith and Lendal Bridge. Access to both landings includes some steps.

York Dungeons

York Dungeons is a great visit for teenagers who seem to like being terrified! There are several zones based on the story of Dick Turpin the Highwayman, The Torture Chamber, The Great Plague, the Labyrinth of the Lost, and the Judgement of Sinners.

The National Railway Museum in York displays a collection of over 100 locomotives and nearly 200 other items of rolling stock, virtually all of which either ran on the railways of Great Britain or were built there. Also on the 20 acres site are many hundreds of thousands of other items and records of social, technical, artistic and historical interest. Entry is free.

Cadbury World is in Bourneville near Birmingham and currently features 14 zones which tell the story of chocolate and the Cadbury business through various static sets, animatronics, video presentations, multi-sensory cinema, interactive displays and activities, and staff demonstrations.

Day 1

Visit Cadbury World* near Birmingham and/or the Magna Science Adventure Centre* at Doncaster en route to York.

Day 2

Spend the morning in York visiting the National Railway Museum (free entry) or York Dungeons*. In the afternoon we could visit the Minster, the medieval shopping streets known as the Shambles, and the excellent Castle Museum*. In the evening you could enjoy a river cruise* followed by a guided Ghost Walk*.

Day 3

Enjoy a day at Alton Towers (entry included).
